Post-Op Instructions

Root Canal Therapy

You can expect soreness after a root canal procedure for a few days. You should avoid chewing on the side of your mouth where the procedure was performed so you do not irritate the area and also to ensure that the temporary restorative material properly sets. You may also need to take an antibiotic to treat any remaining infection in your tooth. If you notice an increasing amount of pain or tenderness, a reaction to the medication, or the loss of the temporary restoration (filling) call your dentist immediately.

Crowns and Bridges

Before you receive your permanent crown/bridge you will first receive a temporary restoration. This is not as sturdy as the permanent version, so you should be careful when cleaning and eating. You should brush the area gently and should not pull up on the tooth when flossing because it could become dislodged. The same goes for eating. You should avoid sticky or chewy foods while you have the temporary in.

There may be some sensitivity and irritation after the temporary or permanent is placed. This is normal and will subside after the soft tissue heals. A warm salt water rinse will help, and you can also take Advil or Tylenol if the pain does not go away.

When the permanent crown or bridge is placed it may feel a little awkward for a few days. Your mouth needs to adjust to the new tooth, and it should feel like one of your natural tooth in less than a week. If your bite feels abnormal in any way, you should let your dentist know. Caring for your bridge or crown is just like caring for your own teeth. You should brush and floss regularly.

White Fillings (Bonding)

After the anesthesia wears off your teeth will likely be sensitive. After that initial period, your treated teeth should feel as good as new. If your bite feels abnormal in any way, you should let your dentist know. Continue your normal hygiene plan to ensure that your fillings last for a long time.

Scaling and Root Planing

After this procedure your gums will probably be slightly sore and irritated for a few days. You should rinse your mouth with warm salt water (1 tsp salt/8 oz water) 2-3 times a day. This will relieve the pain and cleanse the area. Brushing and flossing should be continued right after the procedure, but you should brush gently so that you do not further irritate the area. If you experience any swelling or stiffness in the area you can place a cold compress on the area and take some pain relieving medicine. Avoid any hard or chewy foods for 2-3 days after the surgery to ensure the area heals correctly. If you continue to experience pain or swelling after a few days contact your dentist.

Veneers

Before you receive your permanent veneer you will first receive a temporary restoration.

When the veneer is placed it may feel a little awkward for a few days. Your mouth needs to adjust to the new tooth, and it should feel like one of your natural tooth in less than a week. If your bite feels abnormal in any way, you should let your dentist know. When brushing and flossing you should pay close attention to the area between the veneer and the tooth at the gum line.

Extractions

It is important to follow instructions after you have oral surgery to ensure proper healing and to avoid complications. As a rule of thumb, you should always wait two hours after surgery before eating to let the anesthesia wear off. Trying to eat before this could result in soft tissue damage because you are not able to feel all of your mouth.

The instructions found below are guidelines. After your surgery the doctor or dental assistant will give you full instructions on how to properly recover from surgery. After the surgery you will need to rest. You may need to be driven home by a friend or family member because of the anesthesia. You can expect for the extraction site to bleed for a little while after the surgery. Gauze will be applied at the completion of the surgery, and you will need to change it when it becomes soaked. If bleeding continues for longer than 24 hours you should call our office at 651.730.9266. Rest when you return home, but do not lie flat. This could prolong the bleeding. Prop your head up on a pillow when lying down. Your dentist may prescribe you pain medication, so if you become sore take as directed. You can also use an ice pack for the pain. Your dentist might also provide you with a cleaning solution to clean the extraction site.

You will be limited to soft foods for a few days after your surgery. Some recommended foods are:

  • Gelatin
  • Pudding
  • Yogurt
  • Mashed Potatoes
  • Ice Cream
  • Thin Soups
  • ...and other food you can eat without chewing.

When drinking, make sure you do not use a straw. Do not vape or smoke. The sucking motion can loosen your sutures and slow the clotting process. If you have prolonged pain, bleeding, irritation, or don't feel that the extraction site is healing properly call your dentist for a follow up.

What Patients Say About Engelbrecht Family Dental, PA

Going to the dentist- not exactly at the top of everyone’s favorite places list… am I right? Not to worry, going here was the best decision I made, from friendly, kind staff to a Dentist who is understanding and knowledgeable- this place makes those necessary dentist trips much, much better than they have to be. Dr. Chad and his staff are wonderful!

    Cassie N

When I first came to Dr. Engelbrecht I hadn't been to a dentist for a very long time. I had bad experiences with previous dentists and was leary. I talked to him about my experiences and he did everything he could to make me feel comfortable. He is gentle and really cares about his patients. His staff is knowledgeable and caring as well.

    Dianne E

Who looks forward to going to the dentist??? ME! We make an annual trip from Arizona for just this…almost. But they give us exceptional workmanship and professionalism, which can be difficult to find.

    Ron P

We have appreciated Dr Chad and his staff for 15+ years. They are professional, personable, friendly, and trustworthy. We moved out of state 3 years ago and have ensured that Dr Chad remains our primary Dentist. We have peace of mind knowing he is looking out for us.

    Joy L

I've been going to Dr Engelbrecht for over a decade. His staff is exceptional and professional. I would recommend Engelbrecht Family Dental to anyone looking for a great and caring dentist.

Always a positive experience when I visit Dr. Chad and his team. He has definitely helped me with any anxiety I had regarding dental visits from years ago. Everyone I've encountered in his office is very professional, experienced and caring - big shout out to the staff!

    Jackie K

Amazing dentist, came here after a couple bad experiences and Dr. Chad really made me feel comfortable and fixed the issues the other one made. Got deep cleanings done, which went really well, and they really made me feel welcome and comfortable during every process. Definitely a dentist I'll be going to for a long time. I appreciate you Dr. Chad!

    Steven G

I have had really terrible past experiences at dentists and so I came here (after ~8 years with no dental appts) with a lot of trepidation. I explained this to them and they were incredibly kind and accommodating. Dr Chad explains things easily and kindly, April is phenomenal and comforting, and Anna is an absolute joy. (I’m sure Jen and Karla are wonderful too, I just haven’t had interactions with them.)

I cannot recommend this practice enough. Even if you don’t have dental anxiety, these folks are just so skilled, caring, and lovely.

By far the best dentist I've been to. Jenn and April were great. The cleaning was more through than I've had at most dentists in the past, which I appreciate. Dr. Chad was friendly and easy to talk to. This office was recommended to me by a coworker. I'm grateful to have found an excellent dentist close to home!

    Jessica K

I've been seeing Dr.Chad ever since 1990's. He's the best dentist I've ever seen, his staff is top notch, all are friendly and knowledgeable regarding my personal dental health, I'm sure the same can be said for all patients. I've finally talked my husband into setting up an appointment with Dr. Chad. I just know he's going to share in my opinion as well.

    Mary K

I have been going to this dentist for just over a year now and I have to say I have had an awesome experience all the way around. I used to actually fear going to the dentist but not anymore. I have had a couple crowns, a filling and a few cleanings and they provided excellent care for all of those procedures. I have some nerve exposure so cleanings had always been painful but I have had cleanings by both Amber and Jen and both were amazing! I had no pain during my cleanings with either of them which makes me a happy girl. Thank you, Engelbrecht Family Dental! I appreciate you and your TLC!

    Jean E

I have been going to Dr. Engelbrecht for about 5 years and it has been a great experience the whole time. He is very thorough and upfront about what to expect after the exams, explains what is happening and why, and how to resolve future issues with some self care.

    David S.

Thanks so much for the great care you give me! I thought I'd be sore from the work you did on my new implant but within a mere few hours, I barely noticed it. I'm actually looking forward to the final process.

    Marcia C., Woodbury MN

Thank you Dr. Chad and Carrie for being so kind and calm at my last appointment. As you are aware, I am very nervous to have dental work done. You are professional and kept me comfotable during a difficult procedure!

    Helga P, Oakdale, MN

One of the things I hate most about job relocation is finding a new dentist. I have three expectations from a dentist. 1. Cleanliness (facility, staff and equipment) 2. Painless 3. A bill that is fair. Engelbrecht Family Dental delivered on all three points. Thank you!

    Bonnie Z., Woodbury MN

I have been coming to see Dr. Chad and his staff for several years now. From day 1, I have always been impressed with how honest Dr. Chad was regarding what dental care I needed as well as how nice everyone has been to me. I appreciate all you do for me and my dental needs. I highly recommend Dr. Chad and his staff for your dental needs.
